The official opening of the Martin Beale Building

Friday 6 th May 2011 was a landmark in Cobnor Activities Centre's history. The trustees of Cobnor Activities Centre invited special guests to the grand opening of the new Martin Beale Building , part of a major £1 million building and refurbishment project.

The Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex , Mrs Susan Pyper, marked the official opening by unveiling Martin Beale's commemorative plaque. She praised all those involved in the new development and said:

“What a very happy occasion and a great achievement. We're so lucky to have such a centre of excellence for our young people (and not so young people) to learn and enjoy outdoor activities and, overall, have fun. It's a very fitting memorial to Martin Beale.”

Diana Beale was delighted with the dedication to her father, The Centre's founder. She talked about how Martin's spirit lives on in his legacy; that he knew so many people and had so many friends from different walks of life and that his greatest legacy of all is the network of relationships out of which Cobnor Activities Centre has flourished. Willing everyone to keep supporting Cobnor Activities Centre, Diana stated that the official opening was:

“A wonderful reunion for all those involved over the years. My father would be pleased with the excellent work that's been done here and still continues to be done.”

Local schools were also involved in the commemorative occasion. Bourne Community College Band provided the music and Chidham Primary School pupils read some poetry inspired by their experiences at Cobnor Activities Centre.

Cobstock 3

Cobstock, now in its third year, was yet again blessed with glorious sunshine from Friday 4 th to Saturday 5th June. The annual event is organised to raise money for Cobnor Activities Centre, Christian Youth Enterprises and the Racecourse Sanctuary. For a fun-packed weekend it combines live music with outdoor activities including: Bosun sailing, Wayfarer sailing, archery, rock climbing, kayaking and Chichester Harbour tours on the Cobnor Chairboat.

The action started on Friday evening with live music and camping. Activities ran throughout Saturday with intrepid adventurers braving the blustery conditions to enjoy water-based activities. The live music began again at 13.00 on Saturday and played through until midnight , while the bar offered such delights as Chucklehead Cider and Pimm's.

Nicola Gouldstone, mother of Josh (13) and Millie (10) said of the event: “Fantastic activities, so well planned and executed can't wait for next year.”

Cobnor Activities Centre would like to say a big thank you to all involved in organising Cobstock 3, to all those volunteers that made sure the weekend ran smoothly and to all those who bought tickets.
